What if the secret to vibrant health isn’t about finding the “perfect” diet, but discovering what works for you? On the Life Enthusiast Health Shots podcast episode “The Secret to Vibrant Health: Metabolic Typing”, Scott Paton and Martin Pytela dive deep into why one-size-fits-all diets miss the mark—and how understanding metabolic typing can transform your relationship with food, energy, and wellness.

Why Do So Many Diets Contradict Each Other?
Scott Paton kicks off with a humorous observation: “You take the banana diet and you lose weight. You take the carnivore diet and…everything works wonderfully. You’re a vegan and you’re in paradise.... How can all these things be true?” The paradox, as Martin Pytela explains, can be unraveled by recognizing our individual metabolic types.

The foods that energize one person may leave another feeling sluggish or packing on unwanted pounds. This isn’t just random—it’s written in our genetics and the way our bodies process nutrients.

Metabolic Typing: Carbo Oxidative vs. Lipo Oxidative
According to Martin, metabolic typing is about determining how your body best converts energy from food. Deep inside every cell are mitochondria—tiny organelles that originated as bacteria but now power us by turning glucose into ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

Some people, Martin notes, are “really good at this glyco...or carbo-oxidative” process, thriving on carbs for energy. Others lean toward “lipo-oxidative”—they’re powered by fats. Fat provides about twice as much energy per gram as carbs. The difference in how our bodies process these fuels means, for example, “the thyroid dominant, like you or I, gain weight on carbs and lose weight on fat. And the adrenal dominant is flipped…They gain weight on a keto diet. The carbs are of no consequence. It's the fats that drive their bus.”

Personalizing Your Diet and Breaking Addiction
Scott shares his own experience: “Many, many years ago, I decided I was just going to cut out bread, cut out pasta, cut out potatoes..." Soon, his clothes were too big, and even the tailor was amazed. The takeaway? Making the right change for your metabolic type can make all the difference.

But changing habits isn’t always easy. Scott notes how tempting addictive foods can be—whether it’s bread at 8 pm, or the siren call of Doritos. Martin points out that addictive behaviors are often driven by neurotransmitters: “You’re suffering from an acute anxiety attack that needs to be somehow solved.” The key is to create healthy routines, like starting the day with protein and fat to avoid the “roller coaster” blood sugar spikes.
