The Max Headroom Incident Is Not What You Think It is

There’s a particular moment that every Chicago sports fan who lived through 1987 remembers. Not because of the game, but because of what suddenly replaced it. The screen started acting up, the sound got all weird, and then out of nowhere, there he was.. A figure in a Max Headroom mask, staring into the camera, with a distorted voice and moving erratically, like a glitch come to life.

It happened not once, but twice. First, during a sports broadcast, then later that same night during an episode of Doctor Who. Each time it lasted less than two minutes. With no warning and no explanation. Then, as suddenly as it began, the broadcast was gone. Viewers were left sitting in silence, unsure if they had just witnessed a prank, a threat, or something else entirely.

What followed was an official investigation. The FCC promised they’d do justice. TV stations were furious. But the masked intruder was long gone, leaving only questions behind. Decades later, we still have no answers as to how he did it. How exactly did he pull this off?
