I've always wondered what it was like from a young child's perspective looking around at people always staring at screens, not making eye contact, and then growing up in a generation where most of the kids in your life are addicted to screens.

I am so blessed to have grown up without a cell phone, ipad. We had a TV in my two bedroom one bathroom house to share with my eight brothers and sisters, but I remember my dad putting it in the basement when he thought we were watching too much because he didn't like what he was seeing in US. I respect the hell out of that move.

I'm 38, and if you are around my age cell phones and iPads came into your life after your brain was mostly developed, and you have life memories of interacting with people in a "normal way"

When I would go on field trips as a child, the buses would be so loud. You either brought a book to read, or learned social skills so you didn't feel left out. You were forced to learn how to communicate. Bus rides were some of my favorite times.

I was a public school teacher for 14 years. Bus rides now are mostly silent. It's kids slouched over, headphones on, staring at their cell phones not talking to the kids seated right next to them.

We've created a hellscape for our children to live in.

🛡️But as parents we can control their participation in it. We can also teach them to control these devices and use them for good, and to enhance, not control their lives

This podcast has many, many moments that blew me away and I'll be sharing them periodically. Check the full episode out anywhere.

I wasn't planning on talking about cell phones, but Nathan felt compelled to bring it up so I wanted him to get that off his chest. It seems like this is something that really bothers him and he wishes was different. And that hurts to hear my child say those things.

That means I need to give him the best life I can with what I can control.
