The Russian island of Ratmanov (Big Diomede) is located just a few kilometers from the United States. The international date line passes near it, the border between the two hemispheres, the border between two worlds.

On the island, near its highest point, lies a Lisunov Li-2 plane that crashed in the summer of 1971. It was delivering election ballots to the easternmost border post of the USSR, "Ratmanova," for the participation of border guards in the vote for the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR and the local Soviets of Workers' Deputies.

According to the pilots' words:
After reaching the initial position above the border post, the crew successfully dropped the cargo with a small parachute (the mail and election ballots for the border guards' vote). Then they began to gently turn right wing down towards the south, simultaneously gaining altitude. Soon the plane entered a band of thick fog and crashed into the "Roof" - the highest point of the island. Fortunately, the plane's tilt angle almost coincided with the slope angle of that part of the island's terrain, which is why the plane almost "landed" flat on its belly and did not disintegrate, but the speed prevailed, and the impact with the ground was significant.

The four pilots were taken to the border post. Almost all had minor or moderate injuries: some had a broken head from hitting the windshield, some had broken collarbones and arms, bruises, contusions, and abrasions, but the most important thing was that they were all alive and could move independently.

Since then, the plane has lain on the island, covered with writings from local border guards and rare tourists.
