Phoenix, AZ - A man has died following a shooting involving police officers in south Phoenix on Thursday morning.

Just before 8 a.m., officers were dispatched to a neighborhood near 6th Street and Sunland Avenue, north of Southern Avenue, for reports of a man armed with a knife who was making suicidal statements. Family members and police have identified the man as 58-year-old Victor Conrad Altamirano.

“He lost his mom first, my nana, and then his dad shortly after that,” said Altamirano’s daughter, who didn’t want to be identified.

“He wasn’t hostile. He wasn’t irate. He wasn’t threatening anyone else. He basically was just saying he’s fed up with life,” his daughter explained.

Sgt. Rob Scherer said officers arrived and, while outside, began trying to evacuate others from the home while also trying to establish communication with the man. During this process, police say the man ran outside towards an officer standing in the street. Police say he was “verbally challenging” the officer and had a knife raised above his head.

Several officers were on scene, including two who tried to stop the man using pepper balls and a 40mm less-lethal launcher. Two other officers fired their duty weapons. Altamirano was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

No officers were hurt.
