Beware the Leaven of the Pharisees | Catholic Daily Readings and Reflection | October 17, 2025

Today's Catholic Daily Mass readings for the Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch include Jesus' warning about hypocrisy spreading like leaven and Paul's explosive declaration that God justifies the ungodly through faith.

We celebrate Saint Ignatius of Antioch, dragged in chains to Rome where wild beasts tore him apart in the Colosseum. He could have recanted, could have compromised, could have played it safe. Instead he wrote letters to churches begging them not to interfere with his martyrdom. He wanted to die for Christ more than live comfortably. He called himself God's wheat, ground fine by lions' teeth to be made purest bread for Christ.

In the Gospel, Jesus warns his disciples that the leaven of the Pharisees is hypocrisy. Leaven works invisibly, spreading through dough until the whole batch is affected. Hypocrisy works the same way, starting small and eventually corrupting everything. Nothing concealed will remain hidden, nothing secret will stay unknown. Whatever you said in darkness will be heard in light. What you whispered in private rooms will be proclaimed on housetops.

Then he tells them to fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna, not those who can only kill the body. Five sparrows sell for two small coins and not one is forgotten before God. Even the hairs of your head are counted. Do not be afraid. This gave Ignatius courage to face beasts, not because he was braver but because he believed Jesus.

In Romans, Paul explains that Abraham was justified by faith, not works. David wrote about the blessedness of those whose sins are forgiven, whose transgressions are covered. God justifies the ungodly through faith. This destroys hypocrisy at its root because if righteousness comes through faith, maintaining external appearances while harboring internal corruption becomes pointless.
