The Wild Story of the Conspiracies to kill Billy Graham!

Before we dive into the wild stories about assassination plots and gangster conversions, let’s hit pause for a second and talk about who Billy Graham actually was. Because if you’re younger, or maybe you’ve only heard his name in passing, you might be wondering why people were packing out stadiums just to hear him talk.
William “Billy” Graham (1918–2018) was more than just a preacher with a Southern drawl and a Bible in his hand. He was a world-renowned American evangelist, a Southern Baptist minister, and honestly, one of the most respected public figures of the 20th century. For over six decades, he preached the Gospel of Yeshua to millions—literally millions—through live sermons, radio, television, and his famous “Crusades.” When all is said and done, it’s estimated that over 215 million people in more than 185 countries heard him preach in person. That’s not even counting the folks who tuned in on TV or radio.
But his story didn’t start in some fancy cathedral. Billy grew up on a dairy farm in Charlotte, North Carolina, during the Great Depression. He was raised in a religious family, but it wasn’t until he was 15 that his faith became personal. That turning point came during a revival meeting led by an evangelist named Mordecai Ham. From there, the course of his life was set.
After high school, Graham had a few stops in his education journey—Bob Jones College for a short stint, then Florida Bible Institute, and finally Wheaton College in Illinois, where he graduated in 1943. It was at Wheaton that he really nailed down his conviction that the Bible is the infallible Word of God. That belief became the backbone of his entire ministry.
His rise to fame really took off after World War II. He joined Youth for Christ, traveling across the U.S. and Europe, preaching to crowds hungry for hope after years of war. But the big break came in 1949, with an extended crusade in Los Angeles. It ran for eight weeks and got a massive publicity boost when newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst decided to “puff Graham” in his papers. Overnight, Billy Graham went from a young evangelist to a household name.
And now that you know a little about the man himself, let’s get into the really unexpected part of his story—the part most people never hear about. Because for all the stadiums and sermons, Billy Graham’s ministry was also shadowed by conspiracies, plots, and threats that could’ve ended it all. Only, they didn’t. And that’s where things get really interesting.
