Directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, [REC] (2007) is a nerve-shredding Spanish found-footage horror film that traps viewers inside an apartment complex during a terrifying viral outbreak.

The story follows Ángela Vidal (played by Manuela Velasco), a young TV reporter filming a late-night segment called While You’re Sleeping alongside her cameraman Pablo (Pablo Rosso). Their assignment seems simple — spend a night with a group of Barcelona firefighters, Álex (David Vert) and Manu (Ferrán Terraza), and capture a glimpse of their routine.

Everything changes when the crew is called to an apartment building after neighbors report screams coming from one of the units. Inside, they find an elderly woman acting violently and incoherently. Moments later, chaos erupts — the woman attacks, and the police suddenly seal off the building under strict quarantine.

Trapped inside with terrified residents, Ángela and Pablo keep filming as panic spreads. Among the residents are César (Carlos Lasarte), Jennifer (Claudia Silva) — a sick little girl — and her mother Mari Carmen (Martha Carbonell). As the infection spreads, the survivors realize it’s not just a virus but something darker, possibly supernatural.

The group’s descent into terror leads them to the attic apartment of a mysterious priest who was experimenting on a possessed girl. In the final moments — captured entirely through Pablo’s camera — Ángela discovers the horrifying truth: the infection is a demonic possession, and she becomes its final victim as the lights go out.

Raw, claustrophobic, and unrelenting, [REC] set the standard for found-footage horror and inspired an American remake (Quarantine, 2008). Its realism, practical effects, and escalating dread make it one of the most influential horror films of the 2000s.
