What is the "Outer Darkness" in Scripture?

The bible speaks of a place called the "Outer Darkness", which is not hell, nor Purgatory, which seems to be unaccounted for in the theology of the afterlife in any denomination I know of. And no wonder, making sense of what the bible says about the outer darkness requires a willingness to take a fresh look at many passages of scripture. Is the truth worth it?
