Gunmen in northwest Pakistan killed a police officer guarding a team of polio vaccinators on Tuesday. Suspected militants opened fire on the team of female polio workers while they were administering drops to children in a house in the Matta area of Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack comes amid a nationwide campaign to counter rising polio cases. Other than the neighbouring Afghanistan, Pakistan is the only country in the world where polio remains an endemic. But in the last decade, militants have killed hundreds of police officers and health workers.
