NEW EXTENDED VERSION - Why God Designed Creation to Begin with Light

From the very beginning, creation began with light. We read in Genesis 1:3-4, "God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness."

There is much significance in God beginning creation with light. Science discovered in recent years that each of us begin life with a burst of light at conception! Isn't that remarkable? God has designed life to begin with the glow of light within the darkness of the womb.

Light also appears at the beginning of our spiritual life when a person accepts Jesus and follows him. Jesus teaches this in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

We were once living in darkness, but upon the conception of our spiritual life, we are given the light of Christ. Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:8, "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord."

We are now a light in the Lord and it is up to us to shine His light into the darkness of this world. Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14-16,

[14] “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can let His light shine through us. As we seek God in prayer and seek the wisdom & knowledge of His Word, that light will effortlessly shine forth. And as our light shines, God can create, through us, his peace, love and hope in those around us.

There is one more light to come before a time of creation. When Christ returns, he will return in the midst of darkness as he teaches in Mark 13:24-26,

“[24] But in those days, following that distress, “ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; [25] the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ [26] “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory."

The heavens and earth will be darkened, but Jesus Christ, the light of the world, will light it up with His glory upon his return. With his light, our Messiah will usher in the creation of a new heaven and a new earth. We read in Revelation 21:1-5,

"[1] Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. [2] I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. [3] And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. [4] ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” [5] He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”

At the beginning of creation, our Lord created light and lit up the dark earth. At the conception of our physical life, He lit up the dark womb. At the beginning of our spiritual life, He lit us up within. And upon the beginning of His glorious Kingdom on earth, He will light it up with his glory.

Why did God design creation to begin with light? Because Jesus, the light of life, must come before all things and only through Jesus does all things hold together. We read in Colossians 1:16-17,

“[16] For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. [17] He is BEFORE all things, and in him all things hold together.”

As we await the return of Christ, let us remember that all of the Lord’s creation begins with light, all NEW beginnings begin with light and all things hold together because of that light, the light of Christ. Since we were physically and spiritually created with the light of Christ, let us arise in confidence and shine that light - the magnificent, powerful light of our Lord and Savior.
