Proverbs 23 warns about “deceitful meats” at the ruler’s table, urges us to “labor not to be rich,” and reminds us that riches “make themselves wings.” We’re told to beware the man “with an evil eye,” to apply our heart to instruction, to correct our children in love, and to value truth above price—“Buy the truth, and sell it not.” The chapter closes with a sober picture of wine’s end: “At the last it biteth like a serpent.” (Prov 23:1–8, 4–7, 10–19, 20–25, 23, 26–35 KJV).
