Wheel In The Sky
by Journey
Recorded in 1978 this song was supposedly a reference to Ezekiel 1:16 from The Bible, "The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel." However, I believe they wrote this about the true Earth model which is the sun and moon rotating over the flat plane that we call Earth (just like a wheel turning over and over).
Diane Valory, the wife of bassist Ross Valory, wrote a poem called "Wheels In My Mind", which inspired this song.
When Steve Perry joined Journey, they had already had this song written with the lyrics by Robert Fleischman and the melody by guitarist Neal Schon. Perry explained, "They already had 'Wheel In The Sky' in the bag, but the way they had done it with Robert was different from how I was going to interpret it."
This was Journey's first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100: it reached number 57 in 1978.
