Massachusetts Christian Foster Families Face Sanctions for Upholding Their Faith

The Marvin family from Wooburn spent over fifteen months caring for eight foster children, including a baby with complex medical needs, in addition to their three biological children. Their exemplary commitment to children was cut short when the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families revoked their license for refusing to sign the LGBTQIA+ non-discrimination policy, which conflicted with their religious beliefs.

The Marvins explained that they would love, support, and care for any child, but could not act against their Christian faith. Their case highlights a conflict between religious freedom and state policies, and two other Christian families have filed a federal lawsuit defending both free speech and religious liberty. The Trump administration also intervened, calling these policies “deeply troubling” and in violation of the First Amendment.

The case has reignited the debate on how to balance protecting children’s rights with respecting the faith of foster families who devote themselves wholeheartedly to childcare.
