After his father's death, young Zhu studied hard with scholars, inspired by Mencius to become a sage. Later, his commentaries and emphasis on the Four Books moved Confucianism towards self-cultivation, ethics, and rationality, and away from corruption, incompetence, and mysticism. For over half a millennium, Chinese students consumed his Neo-Confucian canon for the Imperial Exams, promoting education and meritocracy throughout China and beyond.
