Antigone by Sophocles

Antigone by Sophocles is a tragic play that explores the conflict between individual conscience and state authority. After the civil war in Thebes, King Creon decrees that Eteocles, who defended the city, will be honored with burial, while his brother Polynices, who fought against it, will be left unburied as a traitor. Their sister Antigone defies this decree, believing that divine law demands she bury her brother. Her act of moral and religious defiance sets her against Creon’s rigid insistence on order and obedience. The tragedy unfolds as both characters, driven by pride and conviction, bring destruction upon themselves and their family. In the end, Antigone’s courage and Creon’s stubbornness lead to devastating consequences—suicide, grief, and the realization that human law can never stand above the gods.
