Does odor improve the effectiveness of bait stations for rodent control?
Stephen M. Vantassel, host of the Wildlife Control Consultant podcast, summarizes the research by Whittier, J. L., & McReynolds, P. (1965). Persisting odors as a biasing factor in open-field research with mice. Canadian Journal of Psychology/Revue canadienne de psychologie, 19(3), 224. which investigates the impact of odor on enclosed spaces. While the research didn't use bait stations directly, the impilcations of the research are significant for pest control operators and wildlife control operators that use tamper-resistant rodenticide boxes to protect toxicants used to control commensals. Commensals include house mice (Mus domesticus), Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), black rats (Rattus rattus, and brown rats.
