"My World Disappears" (in memory of Diane Keaton and all the bright souls of an age gone by)

In a turn-of-the-19th-century stately house on Fire Island Avenue in Babylon, New York, I first met Diane Keaton—purely by chance. I had stopped by to wish Tony Turco (stage name Anthony Bishop) a happy birthday. Seated around a grand Victorian dining table in a dark-paneled room filled with crafts by Annabelle Turco—including a life-size Egyptian mummy’s coffin—were Broadway actors, stagehands, and, if memory serves, even Woody Allen. Ernest Borgnine chatted away nearby.
Over the years, I’d occasionally bump into celebrity types at the Turco house. A few caught my fancy. This song was written moments after I learned of the passing of one of my favorites—Diane Keaton.

1
00:00:23,539 --> 00:00:24,579
As I grow,

2
00:00:24,679 --> 00:00:26,280
I build my world,

3
00:00:26,480 --> 00:00:27,640
little by little,

4
00:00:27,839 --> 00:00:29,760
it takes form.

5
00:00:29,820 --> 00:00:32,960
Till one day I wake and see,

6
00:00:32,979 --> 00:00:35,679
I'm part of something more.

7
00:00:35,740 --> 00:00:39,939
My world is made of you and me.

8
00:00:41,259 --> 00:00:42,628
The trees I pass,

9
00:00:42,628 --> 00:00:44,240
the mountain streams,

10
00:00:44,280 --> 00:00:48,020
the skyline rising into dreams.

11
00:00:48,079 --> 00:00:51,939
The roads that wind through what has been.

12
00:00:53,280 --> 00:00:55,259
But as I age,

13
00:00:55,320 --> 00:00:59,259
my world disappears.

14
00:00:59,420 --> 00:01:04,680
Faces fade through the veil of years.

15
00:01:06,180 --> 00:01:07,280
Laughter,

16
00:01:07,319 --> 00:01:08,799
the fashion,

17
00:01:08,819 --> 00:01:12,019
the silver screen.

18
00:01:12,159 --> 00:01:18,079
Echo like ghosts in a magazine.

19
00:01:18,180 --> 00:01:20,819
Change keeps moving,

20
00:01:20,900 --> 00:01:24,180
it won't stand still.

21
00:01:25,180 --> 00:01:28,680
And I remember what used to be.

22
00:01:38,420 --> 00:01:39,599
Fashions change,

23
00:01:39,640 --> 00:01:41,239
they come and go,

24
00:01:41,299 --> 00:01:44,659
but I recall the ones I know.

25
00:01:44,719 --> 00:01:45,980
Even rivals,

26
00:01:46,019 --> 00:01:47,099
even foes,

27
00:01:47,120 --> 00:01:50,379
all faces in the shifting frame.

28
00:01:50,420 --> 00:01:51,879
Vic and Frank, (My uncle Vic Damone & Frank Sinatra)

29
00:01:51,920 --> 00:01:53,000
George and John, (Beatles)

30
00:01:53,439 --> 00:01:56,620
Diane's laughter carried on.

31
00:01:56,659 --> 00:02:05,040
Now just voices on a worn-out song that plays where time has gone.

32
00:02:05,099 --> 00:02:05,430
Yes,

33
00:02:05,480 --> 00:02:07,280
as I age,

34
00:02:07,340 --> 00:02:10,800
my world disappears.

35
00:02:11,340 --> 00:02:17,060
Shops close down and no one hears.

36
00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:20,800
The crackle of vinyl,

37
00:02:20,840 --> 00:02:24,180
the old refrains.

38
00:02:24,939 --> 00:02:30,060
Only silence where joy remains.

39
00:02:30,159 --> 00:02:32,819
Change keeps moving,

40
00:02:32,900 --> 00:02:36,199
it won't stand still.

41
00:02:37,199 --> 00:02:41,020
And I remember what used to be.

42
00:02:45,580 --> 00:02:50,060
There was a time before the bricks,

43
00:02:51,419 --> 00:02:56,939
when rivers stayed and trees grew thick.

44
00:02:57,000 --> 00:02:59,979
When seas were wide and maps were dreams,

45
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:03,159
and families stayed through everything.

46
00:03:03,199 --> 00:03:05,960
Back when a friend would never fade,

47
00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:07,360
and time was kind,

48
00:03:07,379 --> 00:03:10,860
not a thief in the shade.

49
00:03:11,099 --> 00:03:13,259
But as I age,

50
00:03:13,340 --> 00:03:16,319
my world disappears.

51
00:03:17,300 --> 00:03:19,280
The light grows dim,

52
00:03:19,340 --> 00:03:23,060
yet it's crystal clear.

53
00:03:24,219 --> 00:03:29,419
All that I've lost still lives in me.

54
00:03:31,000 --> 00:03:32,800
Every soul,

55
00:03:32,900 --> 00:03:35,080
each memory.

56
00:03:36,180 --> 00:03:38,860
Change keeps moving,

57
00:03:38,960 --> 00:03:42,180
it always will.

58
00:03:43,159 --> 00:03:47,419
And I remember what used to be.
