The ancient nations that oppressed Israel can be seen as a representation of any modern power or system that uses fear, power, and violence to maintain control. These prophecies serve as a source of hope for those suffering from oppression, assuring them that GOD will ultimately bring justice and peace to HIS people.
Isaiah begins here with an oracle against Babylon. This city, built by the Euphrates River, actually the river ran through the city. Ironically this river would play a role in Babylon’s defeat. The city was the pinnacle of beauty, culture, and human achievement in the ancient Near East, in the world at that time.
The LORD tells the people of Babylon to wail or howl about the destruction that is coming. He says their hands will go limp and their hearts will melt. They will look at each other in dismay, seized by agony. There will be no escape from the horrors that WILL come.
Those who flee will be hunted down and killed. The human armies who attack, AND based on their own motivations, will bring immense human suffering. The people of Babylon will experience terrible atrocities at the hands of these invaders. Indeed, the hunters will become the hunted.
