Shepherd the Flock (1 Peter 5:1-2)

What exactly is the purpose of the local church? There doesn't seem to be much emphasis on teaching the Bible in most churches today. Yet it seems to me that the Bible teaches that the teaching of Scripture should be the churches priority.
