Table of Nations - Genesis 10
The world history and people of the descendants of Noah are described in the "Table of Nations" from the Book of Genesis, chapter 10. According to this list, the 70 nations of the world came from the 70 descendants of the three sons of Noah: Japheth, Ham, and Shem.
Japheth
is associated with Europe and part of Asia. His descendants include the Gomerites, who migrated to France and Spain, and the Ashkenaz, whose name is associated with Germany.
Ham
is linked to Africa and the rest of Asia. Among his descendants are the Cushites, the Mizraim, the Phut, and the Canaanites.
Shem
is connected to Israel. Through him came Abraham, the Israelites, and the Messiah. One of his sons, Elam, founded a people that became the basis of the Persian Empire.
The "Table of Nations" also includes the following:
Arpachshad:
According to Josephus, he was the ancestor of the Chaldeans.
Lud:
Josephus identifies them with the Lydians of Asia Minor.
Aram:
These are the Arameans, who lived in the area of Syria, with Damascus as their capital.
Ashkenaz:
In the Hebrew Bible is one of the descendants of Noah. Ashkenaz is the first son of Gomer, and a Japhetic patriarch in the Table of Nations. In rabbinic literature, the descendants of Ashkenaz were first associated with the Scythian cultures, then later with the Slavic territories, and, from the 11th century onwards, with Germany and northern Europe, or the Indo-European people, in a manner similar to Tzarfat or Sefarad.
Ashchenaz (Hebrew: אַשְׁכְּנַז, Ashkenaz) was a descendant of Noah through Japheth and Gomer. His name appears in the genealogical records of Genesis 10:3 and 1 Chronicles 1:6, both of which trace the table of nations — a post-flood record of the descendants of Noah who repopulated the earth. Ashchenaz is listed as one of the sons of Gomer, who himself was the son of Japheth, one of Noah’s three sons.
The name Ashchenaz is believed to derive from a root that suggests “a man of fire” or “a fiery one.”
Some scholars have connected Ashchenaz with ancient peoples of the northern regions of the Fertile Crescent and possibly with the Scythians or other Indo-European tribes. Later Jewish tradition identified Ashchenaz with regions in what is now Germany, and the term “Ashkenazi” eventually came to refer to Jews of Central and Eastern European descent.
