No Women Journalists Allowed

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to New Delhi has triggered outrage after no women journalists were allowed at his press conference, a move seen as India bending to the Taliban’s regressive standards.

The event, held after Muttaqi’s meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, focused on trade & security but made no mention of the Taliban’s brutal record against Afghan women.

The Modi government’s silence & compliance have been slammed as a disgraceful betrayal of India’s own democratic & gender equality principles.

Critics say it exposes the government’s hypocrisy, preaching Women Empowerment”while caving in to a minister from one of the world’s most misogynistic regimes.

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate condemned the move: “You talk about Save Daughter, Educate Doctor & remove women journalists because the Taliban minister does not want to sit with them? RSS considers women as second-class citizens. The Taliban also does something similar. Our government should have put its foot down.”

Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra called it “a shameful act”, adding, “The government has dishonoured every single Indian woman by allowing a Taliban minister to exclude them.”

Rahul Gandhi went further, saying, “When you allow the exclusion of women journalists from a public forum, you’re telling every woman in India that you’re too weak to stand up for them. Your silence exposes the emptiness of your slogans on Nari Shakti.”

Equally disturbing was the absence of any reference to the Taliban’s ongoing persecution of Afghan women and girls in Jaishankar’s remarks or the joint statement. The optics were impossible to ignore, a red carpet welcome for a Taliban representative & closed doors for Indian women journalists.

For a government that thrives on optics & slogans, this moment stripped away the facade. Modi’s administration had a choice to stand by the principles of equality India claims to represent or appease the Taliban for political convenience. It chose the latter & in doing so, humiliated the very women it claims to empower.
