Oedipus Plays by Sophocles (Oedipus Rex & Oedipus at Colonus)

Written by Sophocles, Oedipus Rex tells the story of Oedipus, the king of Thebes, who is determined to rid his city of a plague. In seeking the truth, he discovers that he has unknowingly fulfilled a prophecy: he killed his father, Laius, and married his mother, Jocasta. The play explores themes of fate, free will, knowledge, and the limits of human understanding. It is a tragedy of revelation, showing how attempts to escape destiny can lead directly to it. Set years after Oedipus has been exiled from Thebes, Oedipus at Colonus depicts the blind and aging Oedipus seeking a final resting place near Athens. Guided by his daughter Antigone, he finds refuge in the sacred grove of the Furies. The play emphasizes themes of redemption, suffering, divine will, and the power of prophecies. Unlike Oedipus Rex, the focus is on Oedipus’s transformation from a tragic, fallen king into a figure whose death brings protection and blessings.
