What does the Quran Reveal about Guidance and Misguidance
Assalamu Alaikum sisters, brothers, friends and elders:
We welcome you to Statement Number 54 in our series of statements. We will explain in it that: (What does the Quran Reveal about Guidance and Misguidance ), our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, reflect on history and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance.
The Quran, revealed as a source of light and wisdom for all humanity, often discusses the concepts of guidance and misguidance. These two themes are central to understanding the relationship between Allah and His servants, as well as the responsibility of every individual in choosing the path they wish to follow. Guidance is described in the Quran as a blessing and mercy from Allah, leading one to faith, righteousness, and eternal success, while misguidance is presented as a result of arrogance, disobedience, and rejection of the truth. Through powerful verses, the Quran illustrates that ultimate guidance rests only with Allah, yet human beings are accountable for their choices.
The Quran clarifies that Allah is the only true guide who directs people to the straight path. In Surah Al-Fatiha verse 6, believers are taught to pray, Guide us to the straight path. This verse highlights that guidance is not something humans can achieve on their own but must seek from Allah continuously. The straight path refers to the way of truth, faith, and obedience, leading to Paradise. The daily recitation of this verse in prayer emphasizes the constant need for divine help in avoiding misguidance.
At the same time, the Quran explains that guidance is a divine gift given to those who are sincere, humble, and willing to accept the truth. In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 2, Allah describes the Quran itself as guidance, This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah. Here, the condition of receiving guidance is made clear: it is for those who have Taqwa, or God-consciousness. Such people benefit from the message, while those who approach it with arrogance or denial are deprived of its light.
Misguidance, on the other hand, is depicted as the state of those who reject the truth after it has come to them. In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 26, Allah says, He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby, and He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient. This verse shows that misguidance is not forced upon people but is a consequence of their own corruption and stubbornness. When individuals turn away from the truth knowingly, Allah allows them to stray as a form of justice.
The Quran presents many examples of past nations who fell into misguidance due to arrogance and defiance. The people of Pharaoh are one such example. In Surah Yunus verse 88, it is mentioned that Pharaoh and his chiefs led people astray by their power and wealth, yet their end was destruction. Their misguidance came from their refusal to acknowledge Allah’s signs despite clear evidence. Such stories remind believers that rejecting divine guidance leads to humiliation in both this world and the Hereafter.
Guidance and misguidance are also tied to the state of the heart. In Surah As-Saff verse 5, Allah says, When they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people. This verse makes it clear that when people repeatedly choose disobedience and turn away from the path of truth, their hearts become sealed. This sealing is a form of misguidance where the ability to recognize truth is taken away due to persistent rebellion.
Despite these warnings, the Quran emphasizes that the doors of guidance and repentance remain open for anyone who sincerely turns back to Allah. In Surah Az-Zumar verse 53, Allah proclaims, Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful. This verse reassures believers that even those who were misguided can be brought back to the straight path through repentance and faith.
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, also clarified the nature of guidance and misguidance. In Sahih Muslim Hadith number 2654, the Prophet said, Whoever Allah wishes good for, He gives him understanding of the religion. This Hadith shows that true guidance is reflected in gaining knowledge and understanding of Islam, which is a sign of Allah’s favor. Conversely, those deprived of this understanding fall into ignorance and misguidance.
On the Day of Judgment, the ultimate difference between the guided and misguided will be revealed. In Surah Al-Araf verse 30, Allah says, A party He has guided, and a party deserved to be in error. Indeed, they had taken the devils as allies instead of Allah while they thought that they were guided. This verse warns that some people may even believe themselves to be rightly guided while following falsehood, but the truth will be exposed when they stand before Allah.
It is also important to note that while guidance is from Allah, humans are responsible for seeking it and striving for it. The Quran repeatedly calls mankind to reflect, to think, and to use their reason. In Surah Al-Kahf verse 29, Allah declares, And say, The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills, let him believe, and whoever wills, let him disbelieve. This verse shows that belief and guidance are choices, and every person is accountable for the path they take.
In conclusion, the Quran presents guidance as a divine gift that leads to peace, righteousness, and eternal success, while misguidance is the outcome of arrogance, disobedience, and rejection of the truth. Guidance comes only from Allah, but human beings must show sincerity, humility, and the desire to follow the straight path. Misguidance, on the other hand, occurs when individuals knowingly turn away, and it becomes sealed upon their hearts due to continuous rebellion. Through its verses and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, the Quran calls humanity to seek guidance, avoid misguidance, and remain steadfast on the path of truth until the final return to Allah.
We conclude today's discussion with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Amen
