Florida State Player Ethan Pritchard Discharged After Six Weeks in Hospital Following Mistaken Identity Shooting
Florida State University (FSU) football player Ethan Pritchard was released from the hospital on Thursday, nearly six weeks after being shot in the back of the head in what authorities have described as a case of mistaken identity.
Pritchard was transferred from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital to Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville, where he will continue his recovery. According to a university statement, the young athlete “is alert, responsive, and able to communicate,” marking a remarkable improvement after the life-threatening incident that occurred in late August.
The shooting took place on August 31, 2025, shortly after FSU’s season opener against Alabama. Pritchard was driving his vehicle with his aunt and a minor when gunmen opened fire. Investigators later determined that the attack was a tragic case of mistaken identity, unrelated to Pritchard or his family.
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting. The suspects, aged between 16 and 23, face attempted murder charges, while one was also detained for violating probation.
When Pritchard was discharged, he was greeted with applause and cheers from teammates, family members, medical staff, and supporters. His father, Earl Pritchard, expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support:
“We have no words to express our gratitude for the prayers, love, and medical care Ethan has received. We are witnessing a miracle in progress.”
FSU head coach Mike Norvell has remained close to the Pritchard family since day one, visiting the player in the hospital and leading the team’s ongoing displays of solidarity and support.
Ethan Pritchard’s story has deeply moved the Florida State community, which continues to follow his recovery with hope and encouragement. While the legal process against the suspects moves forward, doctors say that Pritchard still faces a long rehabilitation journey, but with promising progress that continues to inspire those around him.
