UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised the diplomatic efforts of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt for achieving an initial ceasefire in Gaza.
He urged all parties to fully respect the agreement, including the dignified release of captives, and stressed that the bloodshed must end.
Guterres highlighted the UN’s readiness to provide food, water, medical aid, and shelter, but warned that silencing the guns alone is not enough.
He called for safe access for humanitarian workers, removal of bureaucratic obstacles, and rebuilding of infrastructure.
Reflecting on the human cost, he mourned the lives lost, including UN personnel.
Guterres emphasised the need to address the occupation, recognise Palestinian self-determination, and pursue a two-state solution.
He concluded that lasting peace in the region depends on diplomacy, not conflict.
