How does Quran Pak describe the fate of Pharaoh
Asslamoalaikqum Sisters, Brothers, Friends and elders :
We welcom to you in our series of Statements. And today's
is statement number 45. And we will be describe in this that: (How does Surah Yunus describe the fate of Pharaoh) So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make our this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.
Surah Yunus, the tenth chapter of the Holy Quran, addresses profound lessons about faith, guidance, and the destiny of nations. Among the striking themes within this Surah is the story of Pharaoh, the tyrant ruler of Egypt who defied the call of Prophet Musa peace be upon him. The Quran repeatedly highlights Pharaoh’s arrogance, oppression, and ultimate downfall, and in Surah Yunus, Allah provides a unique account of his fate. This description not only serves as a warning to those who deny the truth but also strengthens the faith of believers by showing how divine justice prevails.
Pharaoh is remembered in the Quran as a symbol of arrogance and defiance against Allah. Despite witnessing numerous miracles through Prophet Musa peace be upon him, he continued to deny the truth and claimed himself to be divine. Surah Yunus captures the climax of Pharaoh’s story when he was faced with drowning during the great exodus of Bani Israil. In Surah Yunus verse 90, Allah describes how Pharaoh, when death overtook him in the sea, proclaimed, “I believe that there is no deity except the One in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of those who submit.” This moment reflects Pharaoh’s recognition of the truth, but it came at the very end, when the door of repentance had already closed.
The following verse, Surah Yunus verse 91, gives Allah’s reply: “Now? And you had disobeyed before and were of the corrupters.” This verse makes it clear that repentance at the moment of death, when one has seen the punishment, is not accepted. Pharaoh’s declaration of faith was insincere, driven by desperation rather than genuine belief. This is a powerful reminder that faith must be embraced willingly and sincerely during life, not when one is overtaken by the punishment of Allah.
Allah then states in Surah Yunus verse 92, “So today We will preserve your body so that you may be a sign for those after you. And indeed, many among mankind are heedless of Our signs.” This verse is unique because it foretold that Pharaoh’s body would be preserved as a warning to future generations. Remarkably, historians and researchers have found the mummified remains of Egyptian rulers, believed to be the Pharaoh of Moses’ time, confirming the fulfillment of this divine statement. The preservation of Pharaoh’s body is one of the miracles of the Quran, demonstrating its truthfulness and its timeless guidance for humanity.
The story of Pharaoh in Surah Yunus also emphasizes the dangers of pride and denial. Despite clear signs from Allah, including the staff of Musa turning into a serpent and the parting of the sea, Pharaoh remained arrogant. The Quran explains in Surah Yunus verse 75 that Allah sent Musa and Harun with clear signs, but Pharaoh and his chiefs were arrogant and criminal. This arrogance blinded them from recognizing the truth and ultimately led to their destruction. The lesson is that arrogance towards Allah’s message, even in the face of clear evidence, brings ruin both in this world and the next.
The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him also warned against delaying repentance until death. In Sunan al Tirmidhi Hadith number 3537, the Prophet said, “Allah accepts the repentance of His servant so long as his soul does not reach his throat.” This hadith echoes the lesson of Pharaoh’s fate in Surah Yunus, that repentance must come sincerely before the moment of death, otherwise it is of no benefit. Pharaoh’s example demonstrates the futility of last minute belief that is driven by fear rather than faith.
The Quran further uses Pharaoh’s fate to warn other tyrants and disbelievers. In Surah Yunus verse 102, Allah asks, “Do they await except the like of the days of those who passed away before them? Say, then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait.” This verse implies that the destruction of Pharaoh is not an isolated event but part of a pattern of divine justice against those who reject the truth. Pharaoh’s downfall serves as a warning for every oppressor who misuses power and refuses to acknowledge the authority of Allah.
Pharaoh’s story also carries a profound message about the mercy of Allah. Before his destruction, Pharaoh was given numerous opportunities to repent and accept faith. The Quran says in Surah Yunus verse 13, “And We certainly destroyed the generations before you when they wronged, and their messengers had come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.” This shows that Pharaoh and his people were not destroyed without warning. They had the chance to accept the truth, but they persistently denied it. Allah’s justice is balanced with mercy, and His punishments are never without warning.
The preservation of Pharaoh’s body is also a sign of divine wisdom. His body remains as a historical reminder of what happens when arrogance leads to rebellion against Allah. The Quran directly points out in Surah Yunus verse 92 that this preservation is so that he may be a sign for future generations. Today, his body stands as a silent witness to the truth of the Quran and the fate of those who deny the message of Allah. It shows that worldly power and wealth cannot save a person from divine justice.
In conclusion, Surah Yunus provides a detailed and unique account of Pharaoh’s fate. It highlights his last moment of false repentance, Allah’s rejection of it, and the preservation of his body as a lasting sign. The Surah teaches that faith must be genuine and embraced during life, not at the time of death. It also warns against arrogance, tyranny, and the rejection of divine truth. The hadith of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him reinforces this lesson by stressing that repentance is only accepted before the soul reaches the throat. For believers, Pharaoh’s story is a reminder of the importance of humility, sincerity, and timely repentance. For disbelievers and oppressors, it is a warning that no matter how powerful they may appear, Allah’s justice will eventually overtake them.
We conclude today's discourse with our this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Amen
