The launch of Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook which was initially only limited to college students, would shift the world’s perspective of social networking, leaving Myspace in the dust. In an eerily similar story to Yahoo - which missed the opportunity to buy Google in its early days - Myspace actually had the opportunity to buy Facebook for $75 million, but they turned Zuckerberg’s offer down. Facebook surpassed MySpace by offering a superior, cleaner user experience with a focus on real identities, privacy, and a more controlled environment for connecting with existing friends and family. As Facebook users rose, Myspace users fell and, within just a few short months, Facebook had taken Myspace’s place as the biggest social network in the world. In January 2008, a group of people even got together to declare "International 'Delete Your MySpace Account' Day", prompting others to get rid of their Myspace accounts and join Facebook instead. Over the years, it has become one of the most popular and widely used social media platforms globally, with over 2.96 billion monthly active users as of the 3rd quarter of 2024. Facebook's user growth is strongest in developing nations, where mobile-first internet access is expanding rapidly! Artists and Influencers who got popular on facebook include: The most followed influencer on Facebook is professional footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, Shakira became popular on Facebook through a combination of her global appeal, She was one of the first major celebrities to surpass 50 million and then 100 million likes on a Facebook page, The Kim Kardashians used their Facebook presence to extend the narrative of their hit show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which premiered in 2007, the same year Facebook opened to the public. Instead of just broadcasting their television content, they used Facebook to offer "behind-the-scenes" looks at their lives

There are numerous arguments put forward to support the premise that Facebook is going downhill. One of the main reasons is that the younger generations like generation alpha are increasingly turning to other social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, which are more in line with their interests and preferences, A lot of people nowdays think facebook the social media platform is for boomers and older generations! Quite possibly. the World Socialist Website, Truthout, Counterpunch, and others saw a precipitous drop in traffic to their sites.
