"One Man Band" is a song written by Leo Sayer and David Courtney. It was first recorded by Roger Daltrey (lead singer of The Who) for his 1973 solo album Daltrey, where it features Daltrey on acoustic guitar and references Shepherd's Bush in west London, his hometown. Sayer covered the song himself on his 1974 album Just a Boy, turning it into one of his early hits that peaked at #6 on the UK Singles Chart and #96 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The track describes a struggling street busker (one-man band) in London's Ladbroke Grove area, trying to entertain passersby amid the dangers and hardships of city life. Sayer's version features guest acoustic guitar by Ry Cooder. At the time, Sayer often performed in the persona of a sad Pierrot clown, which aligned with the song's lonely, wistful theme.
