9 October 2025 • Harley Schlanger (Schiller Institute) • Former nuclear weapons inspector, Scott Ritter, has initiated a campaign to get the U.S. Congress to prohibit the shipment of U.S. Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. With a reference to the October 1962 Cuban missile crisis, resolved peacefully by President John F. Kennedy through diplomatic cooperation with Soviet leader Krushchev, the threat of nuclear war then was resolved by agreements which reduced the danger posed by unchecked proliferation. We face at present a situation more dangerous than 1962, with few world leaders offering solutions. Instead of talking tough and building new weapons systems, now is the time for cooperation, to build "a new international peace order."
