In February 1944, following the success of Operation Flintlock and the rapid victories at Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls, the U.S. Navy turned its attention westward. Believing Eniwetok Atoll to be only lightly defended, they launched Operation Catchpole — an ambitious assault led by units of the Expeditionary Force Reserve.

What followed was a fierce battle across coral islands and fortified Japanese positions, as American forces fought to secure another key stepping stone toward the Marianas and, ultimately, Japan itself.
