India Opposes Trump's Demand To Regain Control of Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan

India has quietly rejected a key demand by U.S. President Donald Trump to retake control of Afghanistan’s Bagram airbase. In a joint statement issued at a Moscow meeting this week, India joined China, Pakistan, Iran, and the Taliban in declaring foreign military bases in Afghanistan “unacceptable.” The unified stance comes as Trump ramps up public pressure to regain Bagram, calling its loss “the most embarrassing day” in U.S. history.
India’s decision to back this position signals a significant moment in regional diplomacy. While New Delhi has not recognised the Taliban regime, it has prioritised stability and counterterrorism in the region. By rejecting renewed U.S. military presence, India is asserting its strategic autonomy—even as it engages cautiously with the Taliban.
