The series is primarily set in the late 18th century (circa 1780-1790), during Japan's Edo period, but heavily incorporates elements of fantasy, mythology, and the occult. The setting is an alternate version of feudal Japan, where demons (makai), gods, sorcerers, and legendary warriors coexist.
The core of the story revolves around an object of immense power: the Amakusa Mirror (or Amakusa Stone), a sacred relic that can summon the evil goddess Ambrosia (or Amakusa). Those who control the mirror can grant wishes or bring destruction to the world.
