So, they left — and they took those samples to a non-accredited lab for H5N1 testing.
That non-accredited lab was the CFIA facility in Abbotsford.
There are only two accredited labs in all of Canada — one in Abbotsford and one in Winnipeg — and through our legal proceedings, we discovered that 41 minutes after they started running our tests in Abbotsford, at 1:30 in the morning, they issued the total kill order for all of our animals.
Tell me — what government agency runs tests at 1:30 a.m.? They don’t work at that hour. So clearly, they lied and sent those samples to a lab that wasn’t even accredited.
Now, moving on to the exemption package.
An exemption package is something that allows you to apply to be exempt from the “stamping out” policy — but only if you qualify.
There is only one distinct exemption category listed: for turkeys, ducks, geese, and chickens.
No mention of ostriches.
And it’s written entirely for commercial operations, which means we can’t fill it out properly — it doesn’t apply to who we are or what we do.
Still, they told us we had to fill it out anyway. If we didn’t, we’d be considered non-compliant.
So we filled it out.
Shortly after that, we received an email from Cassandra congratulating us:
“You qualify for special genetics.”
We thought, okay — that’s great news. Some of our birds are 35 years old, originally from Zimbabwe, and they carry strong genetic potential for developing valuable antibodies — good antibodies — for human and animal health.
But then, just a few days later, on January 10, we got another email from the Canadian federal government saying:
“You no longer qualify for special genetics.”
So somehow, in just a few days, we lost our qualification status.
And in that same message, they added:
“You must put down your own animals — with your own hands — by February 1, and dispose of them yourself. If you don’t comply, you’ll be deemed non-compliant.”
So now we’re being told to handle what they’re calling an extremely dangerous virus, and to dispose of the animals ourselves, yet if we don’t, we’re punished for non-compliance.
So here we are — sitting in a situation that’s nothing but pure punishment.
