Delivered during the Sunday Morning Worship Service, 10/5/2025. As the details of Jesus' arrest and trial at the hands of the Jews continue to unfold, Luke selectively relates a sinister event that happened during the trial with Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin. Without discussing the legal proceedings at all, Luke focuses on the physical and verbal abuse Jesus suffers at the hands of His captors. We will marvel at the scene before us as the glorious Son of God is mocked, beaten and blasphemed at the hands of a band of cowards. We will ask ourselves why Luke has chosen to position this segment immediately after Peter's denial in the courtyard and Judas' betrayal in the garden-- suggesting that the soldiers are not the only ones mocking Jesus' divinity, love, sacrifice and friendship. We will analyze carefully the nature of the mockery, attacking the omnipotence, omnisciences, Lordship and glory of Christ. Ultimately, with the negative example of these mockers before us we will incorporate ways that we as His followers can honor the name of Jesus and thereby exalt the Lord of Glory.
