This week we explored Jesus's letters to two critical early churches: Smyrna and Pergamum. We examined how Christ addresses the persecuted church in Smyrna with words of hope - reminding them that He was dead but is now alive, and because He lives, they will make it through their trials.

Smyrna stands out as the only church that receives no rebuke from Jesus - they remained pure even in the midst of severe persecution. We discussed D.L. Moody's powerful statement: "He who is born once will die twice; he who is born twice will die once," and how the first death concerns the body while the second death means eternal separation from God.

We then turned to Pergamum - the religious center and doorway to the pagan world - where Satan's seat was located. Even in this spiritually dark place, believers held fast to Jesus's name and didn't deny their faith, even when Antipas was martyred among them. We explored how only the Word of God, spoken through faithful martyrs, could reach such a spiritually hostile environment.
