This marks Mutharika's second term, having previously served from 2014 to 2020. The swearing-in ceremony saw thousands pack Kamuzu Stadium, clad in the blue and white colours of his Democratic Progressive Party. In his inaugural address, Mutharika said that his administration was inheriting a nation in an "economic crisis" characterised by food and fuel shortages, high inflation, and widespread poverty—a situation he labelled "man-made." He also pledged strong action to root out corruption and revive the country’s ailing economy.
