The Holy Spirit in the Breath of Jesus

The word "Spirit" in Hebrew is Ruach which also means breath or wind. The first time we see this word in the bible is at the very beginning in Genesis 1:2, "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."

The Ruach, the breath, of God was hovering over the earth. It is through this breath that everything was created, as we read in Psalms 33:6, "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth."

And we read in Psalms 104:30, "When you send your Spirit (your Ruach), they are created, and you renew the face of the ground."

Let us look deeper into the source of this breath by reading John 1:1-4, "[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was with God in the beginning. [3] Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. [4] In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind."

We continue in verse 14, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

The breath that created is the breath of Jesus Christ. The Son of God created everything by the power of the Holy Spirit emanating from his mouth.

Jesus also imparted the Holy Spirit through his breath onto others as we read in John 20:21-22, "Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit."

The Holy Spirit is the wind of his breath which was witnessed on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4,

"[1] When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. [2] Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. [3] They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. [4] All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit."

How appropriate that the sound of wind appeared as "tongues" of fire as Jesus sent the Holy Spirit out of his mouth onto those present that day!

Jesus also described the movement of the Holy Spirit as the sound of wind as he taught Nicodemus in John 3:6-8,

“[6] Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. [7] You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ [8] The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Our Lord and Savior breathes out the Holy Spirit as an invisible, flowing, powerful wind that goes wherever it pleases. It will follow us and remain with us wherever we are, as we read in
Psalms 139:7-8,

"[7] Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? [8] If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there."

Christ, through the Holy Spirit, is with us, in us and working through us. He gave us this gift in order to unify us in him. In John 17:22-23, he prayed to the Father,

"I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."

The next time you hear the wind blowing, let it remind you of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who created through the wind of his breath, gave the Holy Spirit through his breath and gave his last breath for us.
