10. EAGLES NEST SINKHOLE
This watery sinkhole in Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area in west-central Florida looks like just an average, everyday pond. The pond shape is very much like a kitchen sink with narrow entrance shafts that open up to the entrance room. This room is peaked in the center and drops towards the outsides.

9. SOUTH CHINA SEA SINKHOLE
This massive 987 foot or 300 meter deep sinkhole off the coast of China is the largest one ever discovered. Discovered in 2016 this sinkhole measures 426 feet or 130 meters in diameter and has been dubbed by local fisherman as the dragon hole. Over 20 different species of fish have been found at the mouth of the hole.

8. JACOB'S WELL TEXAS
Jacob's Well is a perennial karstic spring in the Texas Hill Country. This water sinkhole an hour for Austin Texas was discovered in the 1850s. This 13 foot or 4 meter diameter tunnel opening drops about 30 feet before narrowing into multiple underwater tunnels. This small perennial spring is refreshing for a summer swim but can easily be a watery grave for divers and scuba divers. The average diver will usually have no problem with the first 2 chambers of the sinkhole but the 3rd and 4th chambers is so tight it requires divers to take off their air tanks just to squeeze through the cracks in the earth.

7. GREAT BLUE HOLE BELIZE
This sinkhole 60 miles or 97 km off the coast shores of Belize is near the center of the lighthouse reef. This circular hole is 984 ft or 300 meters in diameter and 354 ft or 108 meters deep. It was formed during the last ice age during 4 different periods in time going back as far as 153,000 years ago.

6. DEAN'S BLUE HOLE LONG ISLAND BAHAMAS
The world’s 2nd largest underwater sinkhole is this hole off the coast of the Bahamas. Dean’s Blue Hole’s entrance measures 82 feet or 25 meters across with the depth of 663 feet or 202 meters. After the first 66 feet or 20 meters down the hole opens up to an underwater cavern that is 330 feet or 100 meters wide.

5. EGYPT'S BLUE HOLE
This underwater hole in Dahab and Sinai, Egypt is known as “Diver’s Cemetery” for a reason. This blue hole is easily accessed right from Egypt’s shore of the Red Sea. This dive site has 2 entrances, an easy one which is the wide hole and a hard one which is a few minutes walk down the beach called “The Bells” named after the sound the air tanks make against the reef.

4. THE TEMPLE OF DOOM
This iconic hole in the forest in Tulum, Mexico is not all that deep and makes for a great place to snorkel or scuba dive.  The roof of this cave have 3 circular openings that allow dramatic lighting to fill the water below. The underside of the cave houses fruit bats, motmots and cave swifts. This hole has no natural gradual entrance into it.

3. THE HOLE
This 278 foot or 85 meter deep hole off the coast of Samae San Bay in Thailand is a dangerous place with a past.  This hole is in the middle of a commercial shipping lane where huge oil tankers come through frequently, despite that locals still make a living bringing divers to see what it’s all about.  There is nothing to see above 213 feet or 65 meters so if you want to make something of this dive you’ll have to go all in.

2. MONTICELLO DAM
This 304 foot or 93 meter high arch dam in Napa County California created Lake Berryessa. This lake, being the 7th largest man made lake in California, holds within it a cryptic looking spillway. When water levels reach heights over the hole’s edge water will cascade down which connects back up with the creek at the bottom.

This giant sinkhole in Mount Gambier, Australia has the smallest entrance you could imagine that opens to a vast underwater cave below. The man made hole used to enter the sinkhole has a long hanging ladder that is used to descend into the dark abyss. Divers have to remove their gear just to fit through the small passageway.
