Montecito Heights, CA - The officers were summoned at 8:20 p.m. Friday to a residence in the 5400 block of Monterey Road to investigate a call of an assault with a deadly weapon with the suspect still at the location, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“The comments of the caller indicated that the suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Bryan Guzman, threatened the person reporting with a knife,” an LAPD statement said.

When the officers arrived, they met the person who made the report, who directed them to the Guzman, who was outside standing by a vehicle, police said.

Guzman allegedly pulled a knife as officers attempted to take him into custody, and that’s when he was shot by one or more of the officers, the LAPD said,

“Guzman was struck by the gunfire and fell to the ground, where he was taken into custody without further incident,” police said. “Officers rendered aid until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department personnel.”

Guzman was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition, police said.

Officers located a 12-inch kitchen knife at the scene and booked it as evidence.

No officers or civilians were injured.
