The flight is almost complete, the outlines of the city are already visible

"Landing clearance granted" — sounds in the cockpit. It's like hearing "Land ahoy!" from the captain of a sea ship. Everything is ready for landing: we are flying to the point where the final stage of the flight begins — descent along the glide path.

Outside the window it is cloudy, but the pilots confidently guide the airliner for landing. Helping them is the automatic localizer-glideslope system (LGS) — even in poor visibility conditions.

The receiving devices on board determine the aircraft's position relative to the specified descent trajectory by signals from two ground beacons near the runway:
🔵Localizer beacon — guides the aircraft horizontally, telling the pilot whether to turn left or right.
🔵Glideslope beacon — shows the airliner's position in the vertical plane relative to the specified descent angle, whether to increase or decrease vertical speed.

The pilot only needs to adjust the position, following the "hints."

⚡️ By the way, localizer beacons also "speak" Morse code. They transmit an identification code to the crew. This is necessary to ensure that the aircraft is tuned to the correct LGS.
