Why F1 Cars Have Wood Underneath

Ever notice the wooden plank under an F1 car worth millions? It’s not there for style—it’s a safety rule born from tragedy. Back in 1994, running cars too low to the ground led to a deadly crash and the loss of a legendary driver. Since then, the FIA has required every car to carry a 10 mm plank under its floor. After the race, at least 9 mm must remain. If it’s worn down more than that, the driver is disqualified—even if they finished first. Today, reinforced plastics sometimes replace wood, but the rule remains the same: keep the car safe, keep the race fair.
