On October 2, 2025, conservative journalist Nick Sortor was arrested outside the Portland ICE facility while covering anti-ICE protests. The 27-year-old intervened to stop an American flag from being burned by Antifa protesters, putting out the flames before Portland Police detained him on a charge of disorderly conduct.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers observed fighting near the ICE building driveway and detained two men, including Sortor. Both were briefly held by federal law enforcement and later released pending review by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.

Sortor and his supporters argue the arrest was politically motivated, accusing Portland police of siding with Antifa. The Justice Department, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, has opened a federal probe led by Assistant AG Harmeet Dhillon into the circumstances of the arrest.

The case has already drawn national attention. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized the arrest as troubling, Texas Governor Greg Abbott condemned Portland’s police response, and Sortor vowed to fight back legally. Supporters say this moment highlights ongoing concerns about press freedom, political bias in law enforcement, and clashes between Trump’s Justice Department and liberal city governments.
