Portland, OR - The suspect in armed incidents at two Southeast Portland gas stations who was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with police back in September has been identified, officials announced Saturday morning.

The morning of Sept. 20, officers were sent to a disturbance near 8400 Southeast Foster Road, where a man allegedly threatened a gas station worker. About a half-hour later, police said that the same man was spotted at a different gas station near Southeast 122nd and Division.

The suspect — identified as 30-year-old Bryan Velasco-Ruelas— took off from that gas station. Police then used a high-risk traffic stop to corral him, and that’s when officials said the gunfire erupted.

Authorities said the suspect was hit by the gunfire and was rushed to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said, although there was a woman in Velasco-Ruelas’ car at the time of the shooting, she was not hurt.

No officers were injured, but a police vehicle and a bystander’s car were hit with bullets.

Police said formal charges will be filed when Velasco-Ruelas is released from the hospital and booked into jail. However, the incident they were “considering the possibility that it may be an attempted assault or a robbery or just a menacing.”
