Fear.

Fear can be a tremendous motivator.

Fear makes you manipulatable & people will exploit this.

During Nadia's imprisonment, her captors played constant mental and emotional games with her by saying things like, "Your people & family will never accept you now. You're no longer a virgin (having been raped daily during captivity by various captors) and you've [forcibly] converted to Islam. They'll probably kill you!"

She was understandably terrified & very much doubted whether she would be accepted back into her family and society...

They said this all while laughing and taunting her about her predicament & situation. Little did they know, when she did ultimately escape, not only did her family welcome her back with open arms, but the Yezidi leaders also decreed that, for the escaped sabiyya, it would be like what happened to them never happened, and they would be welcomed back into Yazidi society with open arms.

They could not have been more wrong in the end, but the best lies always have an element of truth. A Yezidi family, in 2007, stoned one of their daughters to death for suspicions that she wanted to marry a Muslim man & convert from Yezidism to Islam, and Yezidi women were expected to remain virgins until married to a Yezidi man. So, her captors assertions weren't out of the realm of possibility.

The Serpent in the Garden in the first chapters of Genesis also plays on the fears of Eve, beguiling her into thinking that God is not being honest with her & Adam, and that therefore eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil was the right & just thing to do.

How wrong she was...

If Eve had not listened to the Serpent and instead realised this for the deception that it was; knowing how kernels of truth can be used to weave the greatest, most monumental & damaging lies...

If even only the context of a story, how different things may have been and how different things may be today.

So, do not be afraid.

And always aim for the truth & the highest possible good.
