suicide is higher in more unequal countries

In the city lights they shine so bright
But the shadows stretch longer in the night
Some live in towers, some sleep on the street
Two different worlds where we rarely meet

We measure our lives by what we own
But some feel lost, left all alone
And the richer the hill, the deeper the fall
Where the voices echo, nobody calls

And the higher the gap, the lower the soul
Broken hearts where the cold winds blow
When the distance grows, the hurt gets high
More lives are lost ‘neath an unequal sky

The papers say it’s an isolated case
But it’s written on every tired face
When hope feels like a rich man’s game
And the poor man carries all the blame

No doctor’s hand, no caring ear
Just silent screams that no one hears
We build up walls but forget the bridges
And the edge gets close where the darkness inches

And the higher the gap, the lower the soul
Broken hearts where the cold winds blow
When the distance grows, the hurt gets high
More lives are lost ‘neath an unequal sky

It’s not just numbers on a chart
It’s beating hearts torn apart
We could choose to share, we could choose to heal
But we’re taught that pain is just “how you feel”

And the higher the gap, the lower the soul
Broken hearts where the cold winds blow
But if we bring it down, and we stand as one
We could save those lives, before they’re gone
