THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (PART 5) THE SUPPLEMENTARY GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Besides the Pentecost experience that relates to prophecy and the National calling to restore Israel’s Kingdom… it should be seen that the spirit within each of those disciples at Pentecost was made holy/set apart with power to bring the recipient back into the image of God by the power of the Holy Spirit while living out their lives on the Earth as His witnesses. That great promised impartation is seen in Luke 24:49… “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” That promise of the Holy Spirit’s being sent by the Father, who came in His creative and enduing power, was in answer to Christ’s Atonement for mankind’s soul, which work first commenced on the Day of Pentecost within the 120 disciples. Scripture says that they “were all filled with pneuma hagion (in that their spirits were first made holy, and subsequently filled {wholly imbued, affected, influenced} without in any way superseding their wills, yet bypassing their intellect and reasoning) and began to speak with other tongues (the manifestation of a subordinate or secondary gift by the Giver/The Holy Spirit; the ‘gift of tongues’… speaking in unlearned languages of others “…the wonderful works of God,” as the pneuma (the Holy Spirit) gave them utterance.”

It should be understood that this manifestation of tongues at Pentecost was, in the first place, in answer to the prophetic word Isaiah had given to the Jews hundreds of years earlier in anticipation of that Day “-- Whom shall he teach knowledge (of God)? and -- whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little (these words refer to the future work of the Holy Spirit within them in order to bring the Jews into the fuller sanctifying knowledge of God): For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people (the Jews, fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost). To whom he said, This is the rest (the baptism of the Holy Spirit) wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing (power from on high): yet they (the Nation of Israel, particularly their religious leaders) would not hear (receive). But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little (over a 30-year or so period); that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.” (Isaiah 28:9-13)

If the Jews had received that Atonement of Jesus their Messiah for new hearts for the further work of the Holy Spirit, it would have led to their refreshing. See Acts 3:19 where Peter declared, “Repent {change your mind} ye therefore, and be converted {turned back from error), that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing (inner rest) shall come from the presence of the Lord), yet when their 30 years of continued rejection ended (which began with the Holy Spirit’s powerful supernatural testimony of Christ displayed through the 120 disciples on the Day of Pentecost), the result was not in Israel’s progressing in the knowledge of God, but rather, as Isaiah’s prophetic word predicted, that of Israel’s falling backward and being broken off from the heavenly inheritance promises to Abraham. That portion then was to be offered to the Gentiles, who Paul said would be willing to hear it. (Acts 28:28) “Snared and taken,” as seen in Isaiah 28:13, refers to the prophetic Word of Isaiah in Roman Emperors Titus’ and Hadrian’s murderous destructions of the Jews and their Nation that would relatively soon follow. So it was that ‘stammering lips and tongues’ became a testimony to Israel’s unbelief as Paul further enlightens us to in 1st Corinthians 14:20-22a. “Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not…” This is not to be interpreted negatively in that the gift of ‘tongues’ had no other public or private use, but Isaiah 28 is alluded to by Paul to stress their need to be “not children in understanding… but men” …that is to say, understanding in ongoing, correct, applications (public and private) of the gift.

Albeit the Holy Spirit’s ongoing internal purposes for which He was sent unto the disciples/followers of Christ, that sanctifying work He would do, as stated by Jesus in John Chapters 14-16, would not in any way be negatively impacted in the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy of ‘tongues’ not being heard by the unbelieving Jews. The Holy Spirit’s primary and initial gift, that of a man’s spirit being made holy, has in view the saving of the soul of the redeemed. (Hebrews 10:39, Ephesians 3:19) That which supersedes and looks beyond that set-aside Dispensational Post-Crucifixion calling to the Jews of repentance on and after the Day of Pentecost…during which time the Jewish disciples of Christ witnessing of Him were accompanied with all the prophesied accompanying signs, wonders, and miracles that continued seemingly among them unabated for about another 30 years. Until around 62 AD, when Paul’s declaration of Israel’s re-offering of the Kingdom of heavens was terminated, after which they found themselves (as we are today) a part of that new Dispensation, in the calling to the Nation of the One New Man.

THE SUPPLEMENTARY GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT…and “dividing to every (redeemed) man severally as he will.” (1st Corinthians 12:4-11)

Which is to say, those gifts beyond the essential one and primary gift of their spirit being made holy, which was promised to all Jesus’ believers, which is that essential ‘born from above’ standing that answers to Christ’s Blood Atonement to be graciously given to ALL believers in both that 30 year short Dispensation after Jesus gave Himself up to the Jews to be Crucified and the present 2000-year old Dispensation. The question is; after the ‘breaking off of the branches’ of unbelieving Israel in Acts 28:28 and the deferring of the promised New Covenant with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Israel until the Last Days, and therefore unquestionably came the ceasing of the signs, wonders, and miracle gifts that were to accompany their accepting the calling to be God’s theocratic Government in the Earth… Did/does those supernatural subordinate gifts of the Holy Spirit have any further appointed ongoing purposeful application in the newly formed ‘Nation’ of Christ of the One New Man in 62AD; beyond that of the intended causing jealousy through the Gentiles who were then exhibiting the gifts of the Holy Spirit that were prophesied to be poured out on the Jews as a part of their calling, intended to “provoke” Israel unto accepting that calling? (Romans 10:19… “But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.”)

And now being a newly formed heavenly Nation, predominantly made up of Gentiles “having obtained mercy through their (Israel’s) unbelief.” (Romans 11:30)… “But now hath God set the members (the redeemed) every one of them in the body (of Christ/the Nation of the One New Man), as it hath pleased him.” 1st Corinthians 1:12… “And there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administration, but the same Lord. And their diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man (that that manifestation it might) be to profit withal (to all in the sphere of each person gifted with a manifestation).

First, what are the subordinate ‘supernatural’ spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit? Meaning, those other gifts besides and following the primary gift accompanying redemption (that of the spirit being made holy)… those anointings/gifts generally that would be perceived as ‘natural’ among and in lay members of the Body such as; ruling skills, being given to hospitality, generosity, helps, being an exhorter, governments, being musically inclined, etc… (Romans 12:6-8) And then various other additional gifts/abilities perceived as ‘natural’ anointings… among those in the 4 or 5-fold ministry such as; oratory skills, good memory, being intelligent, wise, understanding, having good counsel, reverence for God etc. Which would seemingly ‘naturally’ accompany Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers that the Lord appointed “…for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ…” (It should be understood that loving selfless faith in Jesus, cultivated by the Word and the Holy Spirit, must be the force that activates these personal gift/gifts for Christlike service in order to have any spiritual significance/effect on ourselves or others unto fruitfulness. ‘Self,’ disguised deceivingly in the soul, may look like exercising gifts in service to the Lord, but at the core we are yet self-centered, pretentious, full of selfish ambition, self-promotion, and misled by religious carnal reasonings. This abuse of ‘natural’ gifts by self for its benefit must be recognized in us in the light of Jesus’ words and warnings and we must be discipled, denying self, and being transformed into His image in order to be found and judged as good stewards of those ‘natural’ gifts given to us.)
