In 2024, Democrat leadership blocked Georgia state Rep. Ruwa Romman from coming onstage to endorse Kamala Harris at the party’s national convention — because she was Palestinian.

One year later, Romman is launching her bid to be her state’s next governor, which would make her the first Muslim governor ever elected in the US. She spoke to Prem Thakker just hours after announcing her campaign.

Romman says her campaign is focused on organizing and welcoming others into her tent, without watering down policy. Asked about taking on the Trump administration as governor, she says: “I’m not out here looking for a fight, but when you have a Palestinian representing you, you’re never gonna have somebody who backs down from the fight.”
