My name is Jean-Baptiste du Casse, and I was born in France in 1646. I began my life at sea not as a nobleman but as a privateer, a man who fought and plundered under the permission of the French Crown. In those early years, I sailed from Tortuga and hunted Spanish ships and towns across the Caribbean. Spain had claimed the New World for itself, but I and many others refused to accept that. With every raid, we weakened their grip and carved out space for France. Over time, I proved myself not just as a pirate but as a commander. The Crown recognized my service, and I rose to become governor of Saint-Domingue, France’s colony on Hispaniola. There I oversaw the growth of plantations that brought wealth to France but also relied on the suffering of enslaved Africans. I fought in wars against Spain and England, commanding fleets that carried our fight beyond the Caribbean to Europe itself. I lived my life between two worlds—the lawless freedom of a pirate and the disciplined duty of a governor. My name is remembered because I turned a pirate’s sword into a statesman’s pen, helping shape France’s place in the Caribbean.
