My name is Toypurina, and I was born around 1760 among the Tongva people, in the land you now call Los Angeles. I grew up learning the songs, ceremonies, and healing practices of my people, and in time I became a respected medicine woman. Life changed when the Spaniards built the mission of San Gabriel in our homeland. They told us to abandon our traditions, labor in their fields, and accept their faith. I watched my people suffer as their freedoms were taken away.

I could not remain silent. In 1785, I joined with Nicolas José and other leaders to plan a rebellion against the mission. I spoke to nearby villages, urging them to rise up and reclaim their way of life. But our plan was betrayed, and we were captured before we could strike. At my trial, I did not hide my feelings. I told the Spaniards that I hated them for taking our land and destroying our culture.

Though I was later baptized and married a Spanish soldier, my defiance remains my legacy. I am remembered as a woman who stood against injustice and gave voice to my people when others tried to silence us. My story is not only about resistance but also about survival.
